Summer time is a great time for kids to have a break from school, explore the outdoors, go swimming, and so much more! But sometimes our kiddos miss playing with their buddies from school. One way to reunite everyone for a fun day is to have a backyard summer party.
The party doesn’t have to be complicated; you really only need a few things. Here is my recipe for a fun backyard party any kid can enjoy!
1. Have a pool of some sort
Water is essential to a backyard party in the South Carolina heat! The pool doesn’t need to be big or fancy. Grab one or two of the basic plastic kiddie pools or invest in a larger inflatable pool that will last for a few summers. All you really need to be able to do here is sit and splash around a little.
2. Incorporate a water feature
Yes, you may already have a pool, but adding another (smaller) water feature adds a bit more fun. It also ensures all the kids have a way to cool off at once and don’t have to take turns in the kiddie pool. My personal favorite water feature is a basic splash pad. You could go simpler by just using a sprinkler or really do it up and spring for a pool/splash pad combo. You really just need something the kids can run through when they want to take a break from splashing in the pool.
3. Have Some Frozen Treats on Hand
Your little guests are going to need to stay cool and hydrated in the summer heat. My go-to here is the basic freeze pop, but bomb pops are also good. You could also make some your own popsicles or even invest in a basic shaved ice machine.
4. Water Squirters are Always a Hit
Give your little guests some water pistols or blasters to chase each other around with. It will keep them cool and they will get some energy out in the process.
5. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
You’ll want to keep your little guests safe from UV rays while they are partying. Look for a sunscreen made for kids that holds up in the water. Apply the sunscreen about 30 minutes before your party begins and don’t forget to reapply every hour or so.
Bonus features
I like to throw in a bubble machine, music, mosquito repellant, and a shaded area for parents to sit at my backyard parties as well. You should also make sure your guests have plenty of fluids during the party.
Backyard water parties are an inexpensive way to have fun with your buddies during the homework-free days of summer. They’re the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, holiday, or the end of summer. They’re also a fun thing to do “just because.”
