Here’s how to make a super easy bunny cake with your littles this Easter. This has been a tradition in our family for years. I used to make them with my mom, and now my little girl looks forward to making it just as much as I did when I was her age. It’s easy, memorable, and cute. Plus, there are lots of opportunities to involve the kids.
This is the cake that ANYONE can make! You don’t have to be perfect or an experienced baker or cake decorating guru. It only takes two normal 9 inch round cakes and two cuts to make this adorable Easter bunny. Decorating can be a family affair.
Step 1: Bake
Use your favorite boxed cake mix to make two round 9 inch cakes. To keep the cakes from sticking in the pan, make sure you put margarine or butter spray, dust with flour, and sprinkle with sugar. That’s it!
Tips to make your cake taste better:
- Add a couple drops vanilla.
- Use one less egg to make it denser and more moist or one more for more fluff and richness.
- Use real butter and milk.
- Add a pudding or fruit will make a thick, moist cake while a little bit of jello mix and food coloring will give you a light, fluffy brightly colored result.
Step 2: Cool and Cut
Let them cool upside down on a plate. To release, smack bottom and sides of pan, then gently lift. Slip a knife around the edges to loosen if you like as well. If one cake is thicker in the center, you can slide a knife through this part to slice it off and make it smooth.
Place the flattest sides down. You will only have to cut one of the round cakes. Cut the sides of the circle off to make the ears. The remaining middle will be a bowtie. That’s it!
Step 3: Make the Bunny
Using a large platter, cardboard, or cake board (you can find these in the baking aisle, crafts stores, and party stores), place the ears on top of one circle and bowtie at the bottom.
Step 4: Icing
Ice the cake in colors of your choice.
Pro tip: Use a thin layer of icing then freeze the cake to hold it together well during the frosting/decorating process. At the very least, always wait until the cake is cool before icing. To make your final layer smooth, use a knife or a folded damp paper towel).
Step 5: Decorate
Finally, use candies, frosting, spray, or sprinkles to decorate the face and bowtie with the kids such as: jelly bean eyes, M&M smiles, marshmallow nose, etc.
