We all know what August means…SCHOOL! Going back to school can bring out a lot of emotions in both parents and children, from excitement to anxiety. But, ready or not, here it comes!
When we think about going back to school we primarily think of school-aged children in kindergarten through 12th grade. But what about toddlers?
As a former teacher I have always had a love for back to school time; the smell of new pencils, the brightly colored folders, and the new organization and planners in all the stores. When I was a teacher, I always envisioned my future children in daycare and school early on. I had taught kindergarten and vowed my children would flourish in school and have a love for it before they started kindergarten.
When my baby was born I started to think about when to send her to school. At less than a year old we opted against any formal schooling, but I planned to take her more places so we got our library card. With school in the back of my mind the following year, I started paying close attention to the schools in our area and keeping an ear out for any opinions I heard and options that came up. Then, in the spring of 2022, I began touring schools with an 18 month old. The mom in me said she’s too little but the teacher in me said it was time.
So when is the best time for your child to start school?
At this age it is primarily about teaching them routine, how to interact with others, and to be a little bit more independent from their primary care givers. You know your baby and what is best for them. So if you think you need to wait another year, then do so. But if you feel your baby is ready, then go for it!
So what did we do? Our girl started her first day of school last fall and it was the best decision for us and for her. Seeing her smile when I picked her up from school and hearing about her new friends made all of my stress worth it.
Remember, whatever you choose is what’s is best for you and your baby. You are the only one that can make that decision.
