I know I am not the only mom who felt the blow from the Governor a little more than I thought I would.
Schools closed for the rest of the year.
Boom.
I suppose I had a tiny glimmer of hope that Governor McMaster would make a bold move and open schools. In all actuality, it is probably the best decision to keep the schools closed for the time being, and I agree with him. But it didn’t make the decision any easier to hear.
The idea of six to seven more weeks of homeschooling children of all ages, while many are still trying to work from home or find jobs, care for little ones, and keep a emotionally stable household can feel daunting.
My heart most especially goes out to the teachers! I have always greatly respected teachers and what they do. Since I’ve had to now “play teacher” the past few weeks, my appreciation is at a whole new level.
Our children’s teachers and administrators are trying to figure out how to put together a curriculum their students can successfully do from home. All the while, many of them are at home with their own children, trying to keep up with their children’s schoolwork, lead Zoom meetings, chat with parents, and work with their students.
I’m sure these teachers are also worried about their seniors. Those twelfth-grade students who are working towards the next step in their lives, and missing out on all the monumental moments that come with their senior year.
These are undoubtedly uncertain times we are living in and are pretty heartbreaking.
Our children are going to miss their teachers and classmates so much. While we, as parents, are left with big shoes to fill. You can not put a price tag on what these kids gain from the classroom!
I know we are ALL thankful for our amazing teachers and all the resources they have provided to help make things easier to do from home. I feel like teachers are just as essential as the first responders to whom we are equally thankful for during this pandemic.
Just knowing that as parents we are all having the same fears, good days and bad days, the same meltdowns, the same struggles… is truly comforting!
For all the teachers and school administrators, I would only amend a few things…
Teachers should be able to wear pajamas every day; there should probably be an unlimited amount of snacks present for students and teachers; everyone should at least get 100 breaks from school work per day, and it should be required to sleep in until 8 am!
