Teacher Appreciation :: Celebrating Paige Brown

0

There are some people who step into your child’s life and simply do their job. And then there are people like Paige Brown, people who become part of your family story forever.

For the past few years, Paige has been one of the biggest blessings to our son, Jaylen, and honestly to our entire family. From the very first day we wheeled Jaylen into that school, she made us feel safe. And when you are a parent trusting someone else with your child, especially a child with special needs, that feeling matters more than words can explain.

She never treated Jaylen like he was “just another student.” She saw him. She learned him. She paid attention to the little things that make him who he is.

Because Jaylen has a personality you can’t miss if you’re truly paying attention.

She notices the dramatic eye rolls. She notices how he suddenly becomes “hard of hearing” when he doesn’t want to do something, but gets real quiet when somebody asks him a question and the answer is yes. She laughs at his quirks instead of becoming frustrated by them. She understands him in a way that lets me know she genuinely loves him.

And that kind of love cannot be faked.

When our house burned down, Paige was there for us. Not because she had to be, but because that’s the kind of heart she has. She has always shown up for our family in ways that go far beyond a classroom. Even when Jaylen misses school because he’s sick, she checks on him constantly. She worries about him. She makes sure we know he’s missed.

And on the hard days, the days where parenting feels heavy and emotions are all over the place, she still manages to bring Jaylen out smiling. Somehow, no matter what kind of day it was, she would come out telling us funny stories about him and reminding us of the joy he brings to other people.

One of the biggest things she did for me was make IEP meetings easier. Those meetings can feel overwhelming and emotional for parents. But Paige would crack jokes, lighten the mood, and constantly remind us how much she loved having Jaylen in her class. She always made sure we left those meetings feeling hopeful instead of defeated.

Teachers like Paige Brown are rare. She teaches with patience, leads with compassion, and loves with her whole heart. And while she may have started as Jaylen’s teacher, she became so much more than that to us.

She became family.
