With all the new terminology coming out on a daily basis, I feel like I’m a little behind the times. In fact, a young woman I worked with told me I was “so basic.” Even funnier was that I laughed it off, until I looked it up on Google, in Urban Dictionary (which who knew that was a thing too?).
The “top definition” is: “Only interested in things, mainstream, popular and trending.” The sentence below stated: “Omg BAE is so basic. All she wants to do is drink pumpkin spice lattes and play candy crush.”
Okay. so first off, who is BAE? And second, I love pumpkin spice lattes, but I do not play candy crush. I kept reading.
The second definition is: “Used to describe someone devoid of defining characteristics that might make a person interesting, extraordinary, or just simply worth devoting time or attention to.”
HOLD UP.
Was I the first or the second? I needed clarification so I reached out to my best friend. I literally texted her “Am I basic?” Her reply was “-”
Based on the first definition, I guess I am. But is that a negative thing? I love pumpkin everything. It reminds me of fall and crisp weather and blanket scarfs and suede booties. Football Sundays and chili in the crockpot. These are amazing things in my opinion! People who don’t share my love of fall are fine, but I don’t understand them. And when did pumpkin spice lattes get such a negative reputation? They are DELICIOUS!
Now, let’s talk about the second definition. I’m a mom first and foremost. Pre-baby, when I would introduce myself I would say “I’m Brandi’. I work in the property management industry. I run three to five miles a day. I love shoes and handbags, and I love to travel, drink wine and craft beers, and cuddle with my two dogs.” Or something like that. Post-baby, I say “I’m Brandi’ and I’m married to my husband Bryan and we have two beautiful babies – Mackenzie and Marshall.”
When I thought about this, I realized I MAY actually be devoid of my defining characteristics. And as I spiraled my way into self-depreciation about how I’ve turned into “that” mom who cares only about her babies, I tilted my head and sat up a bit straighter.
SO WHAT? I’m a mom! I may not sound cool when I introduce myself anymore, but I have carried two human beings in my belly for a total of almost 20 months! I have nursed both of them for a total of 32 months from my own boobs! I have cuddled, kissed, and softened the blow of boo-boos for almost four years … and as long as they need me, I will do that. I wear my “Mama All Day Every day” t-shirt proudly – even if it does have applesauce permanently stained on the sleeve. I rock my top-knot and leggings … and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Target!
So, yeah, I’m BASIC. I’m a BASIC mom. And you can catch me smiling all the way to Starbucks.
